BEN Namibia aims to empower disadvantaged Namibians by providing sustainable transport, income generation opportunities, and increased access to healthcare.

Their objectives are:
1. Providing affordable and sustainable transport to the disadvantaged
2. Providing bicycle-related sustainable income generation opportunities
3. Promote cycling as a healthy, affordable, sustainable means of transport
4. Advocacy for improved sustainable transport infrastructure in Windhoek

Bicycle Ambulances
When BEN found that healthcare volunteers who had received bicycles through their projects were using the luggage racks to transport clients to hospitals and clinics, they began partnering with community-based organizations throughout the country to deliver bicycle ambulances. Healthcare volunteers also receive training in use, maintenance, and reporting on the performance of the ambulance.


Why Bicycles & Healthcare?

BEN Namibia has developed a unique responsibility as a result of their success in the bicycle distribution market. As Namibia’s #1 bicycle distributor, their name recognition has led them to become a consultancy to non-profit, community-based in-home health-care organizations (CB-HCO) that are seeking bicycles.

In-home health care is an enormous market in Namibia due to the country’s high HIV prevalence rate. Additionally, due to budgetary constraints (and long distances on less developed roads), bicycles have become the primary form of transportation for many health care providers across the country.

Our Relationship

When CB-HCOs need bicycles, they call upon BEN to direct them to a distribution centre where bicycles are available for purchase (there exists a huge shortage of bikes in Namibia). However, often times, CB-HCOs do not have resources available to purchase bikes, so they must either wait or do without.

Promote Africa will now play a critical fourth-leg in this arrangement, as CB-HCOs will be directed to Promote Africa, and BEN will direct us to the appropriate distribution centre. Once funds are raised through Promote Africa, the purchase will be made by us through BEN from the distribution centre for the CB-HCO. These donations will include both standard bicycles and bicycle ambulances.
