Welcome to Promote Africa
Synopsis

From July 1 - August 15, 2008, a film and recording team from across the globe convened in Malawi to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Their aim – to document and record the country's musical past and present, investigating the fusion of indigenous rhythms with contemporary beats and illuminating the path for the future of Malawian music.

Sponsored by TV Malawi and inspired by Alan Lomax's journey to collect early blues recordings in the deep American South, Deep Roots Malawi features recordings from a range of secular individual musicians, small groups and cultural dance troupes. Using a portable studio, musicians from Malawi's most rural areas were given the opportunity to record, promote and preserve their musical heritage.

Additionally, Deep Roots highlights the inner-workings of the Malawian music industry. From interviews at J&D Records, MBC Radio 2, Joy Radios, The Daily Nation and TV Malawi to performances by Lucuis Banda, The Black Missionaries, and Body, Mind & Soul at the Warehouse, Umunthu Theatre and the Lake of Stars Festival, viewers and listeners alike are taken inside the world of Malawian music. Join us and follow the path from production to distribution of one of the most valuable Malawian music films and recordings in recent history.

The film will be available online free of charge, while distributed within Malawi via the Ministry of Education and TV Malawi. Music recordings will be distributed within Malawi via radio and direct sales and online at PromoteAfrica.Org. All proceeds from music sales and donations to the project will be invested into a fund to support other Malawian music projects.
