DEEP ROOTS MALAWI
SYNOPSIS | MALAWIAN MUSIC | TEAM BIOS | THE INSPIRATION | PRESS KIT

Synopsis
From July 1 - August 15, 2008, a film and recording team from across the globe will convene in Malawi to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Their aim – to document and record traditional forms of musical expression from all walks of life in this small, incredibly diverse nation. Sponsored by Promote Africa and TV Malawi and inspired by Alan Lomax's journey to collect early blues recordings in the deep American South, Deep Roots Malawi will record a varied compilation of secular individual musicians, small groups and choirs. Using a portable studio, musicians from Malawi's most rural areas will be given the opportunity to record, promote and preserve their musical heritage.
During six weeks of intense filming and recording, Deep Roots will highlight the inner-workings of the Malawian music industry. From interviews at The Daily Nation, The Times, TV Malawi, Radio NBC, Joy Radios, Capital FM, and Mawu Magazine to performances at the French Cultural Center and the Lake of Stars Festival, viewers and listeners alike will be taken inside the world of Malawian music, following the path from production to distribution of one of the most valuable Malawian musical recordings in recent history.
Promote Africa will distribute the album within Malawi via radio and direct sales and internationally at PromoteAfrica.Org. The documentary will be released online free of charge. All proceeds from music sales and donations to the project will be invested into a fund to support Malawian music projects.
