Welcome to Promote Africa
Our Community Partner Organizations (CPOs)

We are privileged to currently work with two CPOs in Namibia:
Oshiwa Hand Carved Frames and the Ohanje Artist Co-operative.

Oshiwa (“beautiful” in Oshivambo) is a non-profit project founded by Namibian Anita Brandt in 1994, with woodcarvers Paulus Mutunda, Dhumba Joseph and Joseph Kanwa.  Oshiwa maintains the project by providing capital, raw materials and a workshop on the property of Mrs. Brandt’s home in Windhoek, Namibia.  However, at end 2010, the project was drastically reduced as a result of difficult financial times and decreased sales.  Only Paulus still has full-time employment at Oshiwa, while Joseph has returned to his home in Kavango, and Dhumba has found other work. To learn more, click here.

The Ohandje Artist Co-p is a member based co-operative comprised of thirty artisan associations.  Associations are small, village-based groups of artists whose members pay dues to belong to the co-op.  These individual members determine the market price for their products and take them to Ohandje for quality inspection.  Products are then sold on a consignment basis, with the artist retaining 80% of the proceeds and the co-op receiving 20% to cover administrative costs and outreach expenses.
